Arnhem has a long history
which almost came to an end when it was all but dstroyed in the famous
Battle of Arnhem
of World War II.
Arnhem
has since been rebuilt into the second city of Gelderland, a province of Holland.
Culturally speaking
The MMKA has a regular display of temporary exhibitions and is a platform for
Arnhem artists and designers.
Just outside of the suburbs is the
De Hoge Veluwe nature reserve,
one of the Netherlands' oldest and largest national parks.
While there do not miss the
Kroller-Muller Museum
which is on the estate and has a world-famous Van Gogh collection.
For families a visit to the
Dutch Open Air Museum
is a must. Meet friendly farmers, wheelwrights, smitheys,
fishermen and millers all at work in a traditional setting.
On the outskirts of Arnheim is
Burgers' Zoo
which is not so much zoo as a number of large ecosystems
in which the animals live. The zoo
was originally the private animal collection of John Burgers.
Water seems an unlikely subject for a museum. Let
the water museum
prove you wrong.
Turning from water to wine (said the vicar to the actress), the
Netherlands wine museum proves to be a refreshing diversion.
Getting There
Schiphol Airport is a 30 minute taxi ride from Arnhem.
The Dusseldorf International Airport and Donn/Cologne Airport are also within
an hour drive of the city.
The city is also accessible via
bus service and
train.
